OSHA Targets Printing Industry

May 2010

 OSHA TURNS UP THE HEAT

After the recent rash of industrial accidents, OSHA has announced that it is implementing a new “get-tough policy” with companies that are considered high hazard and repeat offenders. Among the actions under this change are plans to increase the number of inspections, boost the average penalty for each “serious” violation to $4,000, and reduce the ability to negotiate lower penalties. Unfortunately, printers will continue to be a major target under this new policy since OSHA has previously identified the printing industry as a high-hazard sector for amputations and combustible dust. Our EHS team has already seen this activity occurring with reported OSHA inspections and activities up nearly 60 percent from just a year ago. The team is working with members that have been cited and has put together a new OSHA compliance resource web page. See www.printing.org/osha or contact Rick Hartwig at

August 2009

The printing industry has been specifically identified by OSHA's revised National Emphasis Program (NEP) as an industry segment with high amputation rates. In response, Printing Industries of America, along with related industry trade groups (including PII), has published What You Need to Know for Safe Equipment Operation, a guideline for reducing the risk of amputation and other serious injuries in the commercial lithographic printing industry.  Available through Printing Industries Press for $139 ($79 for PII members), PII is distributing this 106 page book, which includes a CD Rom of supplemental materials, free to all current members of the Association.  If your company is a PII member and hasn't yet received this spiral bound green and tan publication, contact Sabina Fritzgerald at 312-580-3115, . To purchase the Guide, go to www.printing.org  and search 'amputation.'

Make 2010 YOUR Year for Learning!

It's a New Year and you're filled with enthusiasm to make this Your Best Year Yet!

And even though your company has made staff cuts and you're trying to cover two jobs at the same time, you know the value of industry-specific education and you know you need to take the time to attend a PII meeting.

That's what PII meetings can offer you.  The best part is that it's much more than the meeting topic itself; it's the chance to talk with other folks in the industry like yourself.  If nothing else, it makes you realize that you're not the only one struggling through problems and, you might even learn something from them.

Take a look at PII's "Education and Events" listings--they're local and they don't cost much and they don't take a lot of time.  PII  meetings are all about sharing and the welcome mat is out.  But - you have to try it.  We think you'll like it.
