In a recent issue of the Galley Proof newsletter, we wrote about Frank Romano’s WhatTheyThink.com article exploring the declining number of students studying and entering the printing industry.  Due to the overwhelming amount of feedback, Romano chose to ruminate the same topic again; he also includes feedback from several readers and members of the printing community.  Click here to read more & comment.

In his article, Romano quotes Heidelberg’s Larry Kroll as saying, “In short, no one company, organization or individual can solve the graphic arts talent shortage alone. We need an organized, cooperative initiative that transcends the special interests of the participants, and focuses on the preparation of our next generation graphic arts workforce.”  Romano himself goes on to say, “The printing industry is in the top ten of industries that have donated the most for scholarships. The design industry is almost at the bottom. Let the design industry take care of design students, and let the printing industry take care of printing students.”  Romano suggests, among other things, creating a centralized website to serve as a clearinghouse for information on scholarships available to printing students.  Read Romano’s article and readers’ responses at WhatTheyThink.com by clicking here.

Where have the student's gone?
I believe the printing industry's problem with a lack of young people going into printing is part of a larger social-economic issue - too many young people going to college. Yes, college is great, however, our educational system cannot expect it of all to the expense of valued trades like printing, tool & die, auto, plumbing, havc, electric, etc... The stigma of going into trades must be changed, particulary if we want the average or better students. (One man I interviewed got into printing because his guidance councilor said he wasn't smart enough to be an auto mechanic!)

Where have the students gone
Why do we promote any career as cool. Most of us were not lucky enough to find a job that is fun or cool and still get paid for it. But interesting is still here. The printing industry has paid for everything I have. It took me from a press helper to the owner of my own company. It paid for college for my kids and will see me thru retirement. Why aren't young people today more focused on the real world? This industry will feed them for the rest of their lives and do it better than most "college" jobs will. As America loses other manufacturing job to the rest of the world, cool is a luxury we can't afford.
