Cutting Back to Push Forward In These Times... Galley Proof Oct. 13, 2008
With the economy tumbling, individuals are taking measures to save wherever they can. Some are pulling their children out of costly extra-curriculars or forgoing restaurant dining, according to a CNN article. Families and individuals are reevaluating spending they overlooked for years
And businesses can do the same. In an effort to keep operations running and avoid having to lay off hard-working employees or file for bankruptcy, small and large businesses alike have started to reconsider their daily spending, according to a Wall Street Journal article. One company stopped outsourcing landscaping, instead passing the chore to employees, who would rather mow the lawn a couple times than force their company to make layoff decisions. Another company plans to replace its usual holiday dinner at a nice restaurant with a day of volunteering for Habitat for Humanity followed by dinner at the company president’s home. Dealing with a waning economy doesn’t always have to mean mass layoffs or business closures. Sometimes the first step can be as simple as skipping bagels and coffee at the next office meeting or making double-sided photocopies. |
